THE BIG IDEA

Gender inequality affects all of us, and it’s important that we talk about it. Some girls around the world don’t have access to the menstrual supplies they need, forcing them to miss as much as one week of school every month, simply because of their period. Some have been forced into early marriage and get pulled out of school to have children and run their household. Some live in countries where it’s against the law for them to learn to read or even attend school. And some are sitting in school right now, but STILL experience gender inequality within the walls of their classrooms.

RIGHT NOW, 132 MILLION GIRLS WORLDWIDE FACE AN OBSTACLE
THAT PREVENTS THEM FROM ATTENDING SCHOOL.

WHY IS GENDER EQUALITY IMPORTANT?

When a girl gets access to the resources she needs, she…

  1. Sees herself as a leader

  2. Contributes meaningfully to her community

  3. Earns up to 20% more income as an adult for each additional year of schooling

  4. Is less likely to marry early & more likely to be in a healthy relationship

  5. Gets to choose when and if she has children

HERE'S WHAT WE'RE DOING

Legacy has joined forces with She’s the First to build a more equitable world. Join our campaign today by stitching your response to our TikTok. Tell us: “How have YOU seen gender identity impact your day-to-day experience at school or create obstacles for you or those around you to access a quality education?” The first step toward creating a more gender-equal world is acknowledging the ways that inequality impacts us right now.

Stitch a response to this TikTok, and Legacy will make a $10 donation on your behalf to She’s The First's Girls First Institute *up to $5,000*. Through the GFI, $10 can provide one girl in the Global South with one month's worth of menstrual supplies, breaking down a barrier to her education. Right now, you can change the future of a girl forever.

ABOUT SHE'S THE FIRST

She’s the First teams up with grassroots leaders to make sure girls everywhere are educated, respected, and heard.

The grassroots leaders are organizing peers in their area to stand up together for their rights, such as by hosting a demonstration in Nepal, producing a reproductive rights art show in New York, or leading a farm project that raised funds for girls’ tuition in Uganda. They are women running programs for girls in oppressed communities, from rural Kenya to the mountain valleys of Peru to remote towns in India.
